The 2012 Sonic also features some nice technology options including OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and MyChevrolet mobile application with OnStar MyLink vehicle connectivity. Remote start, heated front seats and sunroof are also available. Production of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will start in the later part of 2011 at GM’s Orion Assembly Center in Michigan. Prices will be announced closer to launch date.
“Chevrolet is the only company building a small car in the United States,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “We believe the Sonic will bring substance to the segment, with progressive styling, performance and value that will change perceptions of what a small car can be in America.”
Offered in two body styles – a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatch – the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is offered with two engine choices. Standard engine on the 2012 Sonic is a 1.8L DOHC inline 4-cylinder unit making 135-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, while an optional 138-hp 1.4L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder is available as an option. The standard Ecotec 1.8L engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The Ecotec 1.4L turbo is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox to let out the enthusiast in you. Speaking of enthusiasts, GM says that ride and handling on the Sonic is tuned by Chevy Corvette engineers – so you can expect something sport from this subcompact.
No information was given about the Z-Spec’s powertrain, but we suspect a hotter version of the stock turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 to be found underhood. A new K&N filter and Borla exhaust help the Sonic to breathe better, while giving a more aggressive growl. Although billed a concept, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Z-Spec become a new model in the Sonic lineup, with the new body components making their way into GM’s order guide at the least.
